Myanmar, or officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar is the largest South-East Asian country on the mainland Eurasia, with its 676.578 square kilometres. The country’s population is about 53 million, its capital is Naypyidaw, though the largest city is Yangon (Rangoon). Myanmar has been a member of the ASEAN cooperation since 1997.
Myanmar is a lower-middle income economy (GNI per capita above 1200 USD), and had a strong economic growth in the last decade: more importantly this resulted in a reduction of poverty from 48 to around 25 percent of the population.
