The 3rd ASEAN-Japan Business Week "Harnessing Social Innovation for Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Development"

Background: While ASEAN is in the center of international business for many Japanese companies, the business environment has undergone significant changes in recent years. There is a growing awareness of the importance of 'sustainability' and acceleration of 'innovation' in business to solve social problems. Social enterprises and impact investments are becoming increasingly important in improving the lives of people. While a traditional business seeks profit for its stakeholders/owners, a social enterprise tends to seek profit from its business activities to achieve social impact. At the same time, social innovation provides a means to co-create solutions based on the active collaboration among various actors, such as industries, government, academia, and the nonprofit sectors. Recognizing the increasing role and importance of social enterprises, impact investment, and social innovation, the ASEAN-Japan Centre will organize “Harnessing Social Innovation for Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Development” on June 6, 2023 as one of the sessions in the 3rd ASEAN-Japan Business Week (June 5-9, 2023), organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) Japan and ASEAN-Japan related organizations to discuss and co-create the future direction of ASEAN-Japan business relations.  The session will bring together social entrepreneurs and will discuss how social innovation could be harnessed to promote sustainable impact investments in the region.
